Brazil’s Public Ministry has called for the conviction of a TV presenter for statements considered transphobic against a deputy who took over a Commission for the Defense of Women’s Rights in the Chamber of Deputies.
In action, presented last Friday, the Brazilian Public Ministry asks that the presenter Ratinho and the SBT television station be ordered to pay a fine of around 1.5 million euros as compensation for moral and collective damages.
In question, a comment from the presenter about the election of congresswoman Erika Hilton for the presidency of the Defense Committee of Women’s Rights of the Chamber of Deputies.
The action originated in representation forwarded by the deputy herself.
SBT says it handles the matter internally
The television station says the matter was handled internally with everyone involved in the episode and has already been resolved.
The Commission for the Defense of Rights of Women of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil elected Erika Hilton as president, becoming the first transgender woman to occupy or position.
The parliamentarian received 11 votes in favor and ten blank votes.
