Mercadona will open two new supermarkets in Portugal next April, in a new phase of expansion of the Spanish chain in the national market. The new stores are in Viseu and Covilhã, with openings scheduled for April 9th ​​and 16th, respectively.

According to , the opening in Viseu is scheduled for April 9, on Estrada Nacional 229, and will be the second Mercadona store in that district. According to the company, this new space will create around 75 jobs, all with permanent contracts from day one.

In Covilhã, the opening is scheduled for April 16, at Alameda Pêro da Covilhã, 68, in City Center Covilhã. This opening marks Mercadona’s arrival in the Castelo Branco district, one of the new territories covered by the company’s expansion plan for 2026.

Viseu and Covilhã enter the expansion plan

In the case of the new Viseu store, Mercadona says that the supermarket will have a sales area of ​​around 1,900 square meters, with wide aisles and the brand’s usual sections, such as butchery, fishmongery, charcuterie, pastry, bakery, perfumery, fruit and vegetables and ready-to-eat.

The Covilhã store appears as one of the most anticipated openings this year, especially as it represents the debut of the brand in that district. The location in City Center Covilhã also reinforces the company’s focus on areas with potential for commercial growth.

With these two openings, Mercadona continues to accelerate its expansion in Portugal, having reached 70 stores with the most recent opening in Lisbon. After opening in Viseu, the company will have 71 supermarkets in the country.

Chain reinforces presence in Portugal

The first Mercadona store in Portugal opened in 2019, in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia. Since then, the retailer has been consolidating its national operation and currently has thousands of workers in Portuguese territory.

According to the most recent data released by the company, Mercadona closed 2025 with 70 stores in Portugal and 7,500 workers with open-ended contracts from the first day. In the same year, the group recorded sales of 2,092 million euros in the Portuguese market, 18% more than the previous year, and obtained a net profit of 26 million euros.

The company also adds that, in 2025, it invested 140 million euros in Portugal and contributed 273 million euros in taxes through Irmãdona Supermercados. Since 2019, the accumulated value of tax contributions has reached 879 million euros, according to the same official information.

More openings planned for 2026

Mercadona’s plan for this year is to open 12 new stores in Portugal, also reaching new districts such as Faro, Vila Real, Beja and Castelo Branco. The expansion to the Algarve is one of the most relevant news on the 2026 calendar.

In addition to Viseu and Covilhã, the chain has already confirmed new locations for the coming months, maintaining the strategy of sustained growth in the Portuguese market. The focus on stable employment and new geographic areas continues to be one of the central axes of this expansion.

With two new openings scheduled for April, Mercadona thus reinforces its presence in Portugal and continues to gain weight in the food distribution sector. Viseu and Covilhã are the next destinations for a brand that wants to continue growing from the north to the south of the country.
