A new widespread blackout affected Cuba on Saturday (21), informed the Ministry of Energy, in second national cut in less than a week that hits the island, in the middle of a serious crisis caused by the energy blockade two United States.

There was a “total disconnection” from the national electrical system, the ministry indicated in a publication on Network X. The ministry added that work has already begun to reestablish the service.

Buildings began to lose power in Havana at dusk, shortly before 6:30 pm local time (7:30 pm Brasília time), just five days after one plunged the country into darkness.

The general cut occurs when a international aid convoy began arriving in Havana this week, taking to the island medical supplies, food, water e solar panels.

Cuba’s old electrical generation system faces daily cuts of up to 20 hours in parts of the island, which lacks the fuel necessary to produce energy.

Since the United States captured communist Cuba’s main ally, Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, on January 3, the island’s economy has been further affected by a oil blockade de facto imposed by Washington.
