Palm Sunday is an important holiday in the Catholic Church. On this day, the faithful of the coffin go to temples, where priests light the palms they have brought. Most often, they are made of dried flowers, catkins, willow branches and hazel. Children often make palm trees out of tissue paper and crepe paper. In the Catholic tradition, the palm symbolizes Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem when his followers threw olive branches at his feet. is supposed to mean an expression of the passion and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Interestingly, its symbolism dates back to pagan times and was known in Poland even before baptism. At the beginning of spring, the Slavs celebrated Jare Gody. They were supposed to bring fertility to the earth, vitality, and protect against evil forces.

This custom has survived to this day with the difference that you don’t need willow branches. All you need is a blessed palm tree. Gently hit household members with it and you will bring good fortune to them. It is important to perform this ritual on Palm Sunday because that is when it has the greatest power.

In the past, there were many superstitions associated with the Easter palm. One of the most interesting was eating palm catkins. It was believed that this ritual had healing properties and protected against serious diseases. It was supposed to help with infections and sore throats, and support the upper respiratory tract. Skipping this ritual could have bad consequences and attract dangerous diseases.
