The date is set out in the electoral calendar and corresponds to six months before the first round, scheduled for October 4th.
Chiefs of the Executive who intend to contest the 2026 elections have until Saturday (4) to resign from their positions. The date is set out in the electoral calendar and corresponds to six months before the first round, scheduled for October 4th. The rule does not apply to re-election cases. The rule provided for in the Constitution seeks to avoid using the structure and position to obtain advantages over other candidates.
To date, the following have left office:
- Governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo) who seeks to run for president;
- Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL), who leaves office to run for a seat in the Senate.
- Ronaldo Caiado (PSD) also left the government of Goiás this Tuesday, 31st, to run for president.
In addition to the heads of the Executive, other public officeholders must step aside to contest the election, as determined by the Ineligibility Law. In this case, the deadlines vary depending on the position. At least 17 of the 38 ministers in Lula’s government will leave office to contest the October elections.
There were also changes at the municipal level. Eight secretaries from the administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) left their positions at São Paulo City Hall this Wednesday, April 1st, to contest the general elections in October.
O April 4th also marks the deadline for registering the statutes of parties and federations who intend to participate in the 2026 elections. The date is still the limit for future candidates to have electoral domicile in the constituency in which they wish to compete.
