Sabesp reduces water loss by 15.1 billion liters

Strategy resulted in enough saved volume to supply the Metropolitan Region for 30 days

On the eve of the end of the 2025/2026 wet season, on Tuesday (March 31, 2026), water savings with the reduction of nighttime pressure in Greater São Paulo reached 151 billion liters, since August last year.

The volume saved, enough to supply 20.34 million people for 30 days, the equivalent of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo for the same period, is the result of an integrated strategy that combined pressure management, structural works and operational reinforcement, aimed at increasing water security and regularity of supply in the capital and Greater São Paulo.

In addition to expanding the reduction, a measure determined by the (Public Services Regulatory Agency of the State of São Paulo) in partnership with the Government of São Paulo, the fight against losses has been intensifying. Between October 2025 and March 2026, 31 billion liters of water were saved, with more than 60 thousand preventive maintenance and equipment replacements and inspections on more than 17 thousand kilometers of network. The volume recovered is equivalent to an additional 1,000 liters per second in the system, or the filling of two water tanks per second.

As a complement to structural actions, the Company expanded the Reserva Certa program, aimed at the free installation of water tanks for low-income families (Social and Vulnerable Tariffs). Since the beginning of the program, more than 1,000 families have already been served, and another 165 are in the installation phase. The initiative guarantees supply autonomy for up to 24 hours, in accordance with technical standard NBR 5626.

At the same time, Sabesp continues to advance in large-scale structural works, such as the Billings–Taiaçupeba transposition and the modernization of the Baixo Cotia, Rio Grande and Alto da Boa Vista water treatment stations, in addition to the implementation of 25 new buffer reservoirs, which will further expand the storage capacity and water security of the Metropolitan Region.

With the end of the wet period, Sabesp enters the low rainfall phase with a more prepared and resilient system. The works, combating losses and encouraging home reservations form a set of actions that reduce impacts on the population’s routine and ensure greater water security for the 22 million inhabitants of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo.

At the same time, the Company reinforces the importance of the population’s collaboration in the conscious use of water, essential for going through the dry period with responsibility and balance.
