Trump announces tariffs of up to 100% on imported medicines

The US government also reformulated taxes on steel, aluminum and copper products, reducing them from 50% to 25%

The President of the USA, (Republican Party), announced on Thursday (April 2, 2026) tariffs of up to 100% on certain imported medicines. The goal is to get drug manufacturers to produce within the US.

The new charges come into effect within 120 days for large pharmaceutical companies and within 180 days for smaller ones.

According to the White House, the measure will apply to patented medicines that are manufactured in countries without tariff agreements with the US and by companies that do not have sales contracts. “most favored nation price” with the North American government.

For those who do not have a pricing agreement but are building such projects in the US, a 20% tariff will be applied, which can increase to 100% in 4 years.

The White House also announced on Thursday (April 2) the reformulation of tariffs on products made with imported steel, aluminum and copper. There will be a reduction from 50% to 25%.

Derivative products that contain more than 15% of their total weight in steel, aluminum or copper will have a tariff of 25% on the full value of the import.
