The opening leg of the Diamond League season, scheduled to take place in Qatar’s capital Doha on May 8, has been postponed until June 19 due to the ongoing conflict in the Gulf, organizers said on Wednesday.
The athletics event is since the United States and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran, and the Islamic Republic responded by firing missiles at neighboring countries.
“In the interest of the safety of athletes and spectators, the decision has been made to postpone the event. If conditions permit, it will be held on June 19,” organizers said in a statement.
“As is expected in Doha in June, the event will also be moved from the Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium. The stadium is temperature controlled.”
