When a young star emerges from a dense, cold cloud of gas and dust, the prehistory of all the planets that will later orbit it begins. Such a molecular cloud collapses under its own gravity, matter condenses into a baby star in its center, and a rotating disk of gas and fine dust grains forms all around.
