The defense of (), 71, asked this Tuesday (21) that the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) authorize surgery on the former president’s right shoulder, . The request is that the procedure be carried out this Friday (24) or this Saturday (25).
In an order, the lawyers state that Bolsonaro has persistent pain and functional incapacity in his shoulder, requiring him to take painkillers every day.
If authorized, the procedure will be to repair the right shoulder rotator cuff and associated injuries. It will be performed by orthopedic doctor Alexandre Paniago arthroscopically — a less invasive type of surgery with small cuts in the joint through which a digital camera is inserted to view the area internally and instruments to treat the injuries.
According to the document presented to Moraes, Bolsonaro’s exams indicated “high-grade injury to the supraspinatus tendon, with significant retraction, involvement of the upper third of the subscapularis tendon, subluxation of the long head of the biceps and associated injuries.”
“The same medical report expressly records that the patient is fit to undergo the operation, a circumstance that rules out any allegation of immediate clinical inopportunity and demonstrates that the procedure is not the result of mere personal convenience, but of concrete therapeutic need, based on specialized technical assessment”, says the defense.
Lawyers ask for authorization from the Supreme Court minister for all preparatory, pre-operative, hospitalization, procedure, post-operative and rehabilitation medical acts. Currently, the former president can receive, without the need for prior authorization, a medical team at his home.
On March 24, Alexandre de Moraes transferred Bolsonaro from Papudinha, where he was serving a sentence for an attempted coup d’état, to house arrest. The measure initially has a period of 90 days, for the former president to fully recover from bronchopneumonia.
It was during his hospitalization at the DF Star hospital, in Brasília due to pneumonia, that doctors took the opportunity to evaluate a pain in his right shoulder reported by Bolsonaro and confirmed the need for surgery there.
