Tottenham hires emergency psychologist: will there be time?

The professional needs to be discreet, extremely trustworthy and capable of working at the highest level of world football.

Tottenham is going through one of the most delicate moments in its recent history. Currently in 18th place in the Premier League, the club is just 2 points away from the safety zone and has accumulated almost four months without winning a match in the league (the last victory was on December 28th).

To avoid relegation — something that hasn’t happened in 49 years — Spurs need to win their remaining five matches. A tough mission, even more so with the cast showing clear frustration and discouragement.

Faced with this scenario of extreme pressure, the club made an interesting decision: it announced on LinkedIn a vacancy for Psychologist Leader of the main men’s team. And with this he hopes to improve the players’ mentality, develop a performance culture based on psychological principles and help the team overcome the delicate moment.

The role was described as a “high impact role”. The professional needs to be discreet, extremely trustworthy and capable of working at the highest level of world football.

As every sports psychologist knows, good psychology in football does not work as an emergency medicine. It is much more effective when done continuously, preventively and integrated throughout the season.

A good professional can certainly help with specific adjustments and provide immediate emotional support, but it is difficult to carry out in-depth and transformative work in such a short period of time, especially with the team already sunk in the table and without victories for months.

As they say: the ideal would be to have done the maintenance before the mess started.

It will be very interesting to follow these final moments of Tottenham’s season. The atmosphere is pure drama. It could be an epic finale of salvation or the saddest chapter in the club’s last 50 years.

I’m here to cheer you on so that football has a good story in store for us — whatever it may be. Until next time.
