Austrian firefighters, despite partial success, did not manage to fully control the large-scale fire that broke out near the village of Maria Luggau on Thursday in the federal state of Carinthia. The flames have already engulfed an area of 110 hectares. TASR informs about it according to the DPA agency.
The fire is spreading through an uninhabited area and currently does not pose a risk to any municipalities. However, emergency services closed the nearby state road B111 between the town of St. Lorenzen and Maria Luggau. It is not yet clear what caused the fire.
Firefighting conditions are extremely demanding, as firefighters have to work in steep terrain. So far, they have been deployed in the intervention seven helicopters and 33 fire brigades from Carinthia and East Tyrol.
