Cármen Lúcia defends the creation of electoral brigades for female candidates

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Cármen Lúcia, proposed the creation of electoral brigades for female candidates in the October elections this year. The proposal came up during a master class at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, whose theme was “Violence against women: contemporary challenges and ways to combat it”.

“That we also create electoral brigades for women candidates, because, if we don’t create them, we will have more and more violence being practiced. I am proposing, even based on my experience as president of the TSE in the 2024 elections, that we start by creating, as we have, the Maria da Penha brigade, which is activated immediately to avoid a worse outcome”, he explained.

When addressing the topic, the minister also defended a cultural change to stop feminicide in the country and ensure that women’s fundamental rights are fully respected, without the constant threat of violence.

Cármen will not preside over this year’s elections. In April, the minister brought forward the election for the new president of the Superior Electoral Court, which elected minister Kassio Nunes Marques in a symbolic vote, with minister André Mendonça as vice-president.

The vote was symbolic because the choice of the court’s command is made based on seniority among the ministers who also make up the STF. The ministers used an electronic ballot box to vote.

Nunes arrives at the helm of the Electoral Court with a challenge to fulfill: the self-imposed proposal to reduce political tension amid the growing polarization between right and left at the polls.
