North Korea is estimated to have sent approximately 14,000 troops to the Kursk region. South Korean, Ukrainian and Western officials say they have suffered heavy casualties in the fighting. More than 6,000 North Korean soldiers could have fallen in them.
Self-destruction as heroism
Many of them, given the possibility of capture, decided to commit suicide instead. On the occasion of the ceremonial completion of the monument in honor of fallen North Korean soldiers, Kim called them heroes, the North Korean news agency KCNA wrote on Monday.
“It is not only the heroes who unhesitatingly embarked on the path of self-destruction and suicide to defend the great honor, but also those who fell in the attack on the front lines of the offensive battles,” the leader said. He also called the surviving soldiers patriots.
Frustration and sacrifice
“Those who writhed in frustration at not fulfilling their military duty, instead of suffering the agony of their bodies torn by bullets and shells – they too can be called loyal fighters and patriots of the party,” he added.
