Lisbon Naval Association celebrates 170 years with salute from the School Ship-Sagres

The Lisbon Naval Association celebrated, this Thursday, its 170th anniversary with a celebration that included a very special salute from the historic School Ship-Sagres.

The vessel, one of the greatest symbols of the Portuguese Navy, passed close to the banks of the Tagus River to pay tribute to the association, qwhich has been a pillar of national nautical sport for more than a century and a half.

The salute began with a symbolic message transmitted directly from the ship:

“Lisbon Naval Association, this is Navio Escola-Sagres, we thank you for your greetings and we also wish you happy celebrations of the 170th anniversary of the Lisbon Naval Association”, said the crew.

Miguel Vieira, vice-commodore of the Lisbon Naval Association, did not hide his pride at the moment:

“It’s not every day that an organization turns 170 years old, but it’s also not every day that we have the pleasure and honor of having a ship like the Navio Escola Sagres come here to greet us.”

The association, with a long history and tradition, It has two main sections: sailing and rowing.

João Prata, president of the Rowing Section of the Lisbon Naval Association, explained the relevance of rowing within the institution:

“A very relevant section. It has hundreds of rowers at the most diverse levels, from children to masters, with a very great importance also in what is now leisure rowing. And also a relevant role for rowing for people with disabilities and also school rowing, through the Lisbon City Council.”

With 170 years of existence, the Lisbon Naval Association It is among the 30 oldest nautical clubs in Europe and is the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula. Its importance in national nautical sport is undeniable, and its sections continue to be a development center for athletes of different ages and skill levels.
