BYD reaches 1st place in retail sales in April; Fiat leads across all channels

After reaching the top in the model rankings with the Dolphin Mini, BYD It was the best-selling car brand in retail in April. In total, 14,900 vehicles were sold in the showroom of the Chinese brand’s dealerships, a number that narrowly surpassed that of the Volkswagensecond place in the month, with 14.8 thousand cars sold.

When direct sales are included, closed with customers such as car rental companies, BYD was in fifth place, behind, last month, FiatVolkswagen, General Motors (GM) e Hyundai. Even so, in this account that includes all channels, the Chinese brand renewed its best monthly number in Brazil, with 18.5 thousand cars sold in April.

The results were anticipated by BYD itself, as the balance sheet with the consolidated results for April will only be released next week by Fenabrave, the association of car dealers. Along with the Dolphin Mini, an electric car that has been leading the retail market for three months, reaching 5,900 units in April, performance was driven by hybrid models from the Song family, which reached 4,100 cars.

The leadership among brands in retail, obtained by BYD four years after its arrival in Brazil, is another milestone in the Chinese invasion of the automobile market. Traditional automakers ask the government for barriers to curb imports from China.

At the beginning of the year, amid a clash over import quotas for hybrid and electric vehicles, Anfavea, an association of automakers installed in the country for decades, pointed out potential impacts of R$103 billion on the auto parts chain, and R$26 billion on government revenue, if public policies encourage the replacement of national products with imported ones.

BYD’s goal is to become, by 2030, the number one brand in the country, including all sales channels. In addition to complete cars, the brand brings partially assembled cars from China to complete production at the factory in Camaçari, Bahia.

“Democratization is not just about making technology more accessible, but about expanding the market itself and making it more attractive to the consumer… Having an electric car seemed like a distant dream for the majority of the population until very recently and today this option is already real for hundreds of thousands of people”, comments the senior vice-president of BYD in Brazil, Alexandre Baldy.
