Rains cause flooding and more than 500 people are affected in RS

The heavy rains that hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the early hours of this Saturday (2), left 22 cities in Rio Grande do Sul with structural damage, according to the state Civil Defense. The agency recorded more than 500 people were displaced in just one municipality.

Civil Defense issued moderate level alerts for landslides for eight citiesnamely Porto Alegre, Nova Hartz, Caxias do Sul, Muçum, Igrejinha, Três Coroas, Parobé and Fontoura Xavier.

According to the department, of the 497 municipalities in the state, 80 recorded rainfall above 69 millimeters in just 12 hours. Within 24 hours, the city of Rosário do Sul was the most affected, recording 251 mm of precipitation in just 24 hoursuntil the end of this Saturday afternoon (2).

Rosário do Sul, which has around 36,630 inhabitants, there are 512 homeless people, according to the latest state Civil Defense bulletin. The city council decreed level II emergency situation due to storms that caused flooding, flooding and significant damage in several regions of the municipality.

The speeds also arrived in 20 municipalities, such as Soledade, with more than 30 thousand inhabitants, reaching 85.3 km/h.

Among the reported damages are 17 floods and overflows, six incidents and two on roads. See the affected municipalities:

  • Pass Seven;
  • Rosário do Sul;
  • Santa Maria;
  • Saint Gabriel;
  • São Sepé;
  • Silveira Martins;
  • Sobradinho;
  • Tucunduva;
  • Uruguayan and;
  • Vila Nova do Sul.

Four municipalities identified 524 in four cities. They are:

  • Sharp: 4 homeless;
  • Ernestine: 8 homeless and;
  • Rosario do Sul: 512 evicted.

On May 1st, Civil Defense warned the population about heavy rains in much of the state with orange alert and gusts of winds that could reach 90 km/h across the state.
