Minister of Communications rules out leaving government due to veto of Messiah

Frederico Siqueira Filho is nominated for Alcolumbre; Planalto discusses removing allies of the Senate president from the government

The Minister of Communications, Frederico Siqueira Filho, said this Monday (May 4, 2026) that he did not speak with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) about a possible departure from the government after the Planalto’s break with the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP).

Recommended by Alcolumbre, Siqueira minimized the possibility of being removed from the Esplanada because of the friction between Lula and the head of the Senate:

“Our indication is technical, so we don’t deal with this political issue. I didn’t speak to him [Lula] during this period [para discutir eventual demissão]”, the minister told journalists after the opening ceremony of the Anatel telephone auction.

After the Casa Alta nominated Jorge Messias to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) in an articulation by Alcolumbre, Planalto decided to dismiss nominees and sponsors of the president of the Senate from the government.

Asked about a possible dismissal, Siqueira said he hopes to stay in the position at least until the end of 2026: “This is our expectation”.

COUNTERATTACK

Since last week, the Lula government has been discussing retaliatory measures against the president of the Senate, such as the dismissal of nominees linked to the senator. The hammer has not yet been struck and depends on the approval of the PT member, who is waiting for the temperature to drop and focuses on economic issues.

Alcolumbre has great power within the government structure, with nominees in various spheres of the Executive. The Minister of National Integration, Waldez Góes, is also sponsored by the head of the Senate.
