After appeals, the sum of João de Deus’ sentences drops to 215 years

A sum of penalties in the processes by which the religious leader João Teixeira de Faria, known as John of God, fell from 488 years and three months to 215 years, one month and 20 daysaccording to a survey by the Court of Justice of the State of Goiás (TJGO). THE reduction of the punishments imposed in the first instance if it happened after the defense lodge appeals to be judged by the Superior Court of Justice (STJ).

According to court data, 16 complaints against João de Deus for sexual crimesof which duas were archived. A process of infraction against consumer relations was also closed. The feathers totaled 59 years, 4 months and 15 days. The religious leader was still charged with one year in prison, three months in prison and a 20-day fine by illegal possession of a firearm.

John of God was preventively arrested in 2018 after complaints from several women. They reported having suffered sexual abuse of the religious leader during services at Casa Dom Inácio de Loyolain Abadiânia, in the interior of Goiás. Since 2021, he has been under house arrestin Anápolis, and prevented from approaching of the city where he worked and the victims.
