Brazil launches candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council

Country is competing for a mandate for the period from 2027 to 2029; announcement was made on Thursday (May 7) at the Itamaraty Palace

The federal government officially launched this Thursday (May 7, 2026) Brazil’s candidacy for a place on the UN Human Rights Council (United Nations). The dispute is for the term of office from 2027 to 2029. The launch ceremony was held at Palácio Itamaraty, in Brasília.

The candidacy represents an attempt to resume the country’s active participation in multilateral spaces and to strengthen agendas against inequalities and discrimination. If elected, Brazil will join the collegiate responsible for monitoring the protection of human rights globally.

Elections will be held in October 2026, during the General Assembly of , in New York. The process takes place through a secret vote by each member of the United Nations. Brazil has been a member of the council since its foundation, in 2006, and is currently serving its 6th term. The body is made up of 47 member countries.
