French police arrest 16 people for child abuse: A sharp stop for dozens of teachers

Police in Paris on Wednesday detained 16 people as part of an investigation into sexual abuse in Paris kindergartens and elementary schools. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

  • The police in Paris detained sixteen people on suspicion of sexual abuse.
  • The detained persons face charges of rape, sexual assault and violence against minors.
  • The investigation concerns eighty-four kindergartens and other facilities.
  • Since the beginning of this year, seventy-eight teachers have been suspended for various suspicions.
  • The city is launching an action plan for twenty million euros for system changes.

Investigators confirmed to Le Monde that the individuals face charges of rape and sexual assault of minors, as well as committing violence against minors. Some of the arrested persons have already been suspended from their jobs.

DPA states that parents and politicians in Paris are faced with reports of violence and abuse in the city’s children’s groups, which apparently have not always been thoroughly investigated. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in an interview with RTL on Sunday that they are investigating the situation in 84 kindergartens, approximately 20 elementary schools and ten kindergartens. “All Paris arrondissements are affected,” she stated.

The new mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, announced in April that 78 teaching staff had been suspended since the beginning of this year, including 31 on suspicion of sexual violence. In 2025, 30 people were suspended, including 16 on suspicion of sexual violence.

The mayor announced an action plan worth 20 million euros, which includes quick and transparent reporting of suspected cases, involvement and support of parents and structural improvements to the situation.
