The brown bear was not observed after Thursday’s attack in Liptov, but monitoring will continue. The brown bear intervention team of the Tatra National Park (TANAP) documented the event and then monitored the attack site and its surroundings using observation and thermal imaging technology. This was confirmed for TASR by Jarmila Hlaváčová from the communications department of the TANAP Administration.
On Thursday in the morning, a brown bear attacked a forest worker in a forest in the cadastral territory of Sestrč near the village of Liptovská Anna in the district of Liptovský Mikuláš during the performance of his duties. “According to the statements, it was an individual with an estimated weight of up to 100 kilograms,” pointed out Hlaváčová.
Since the incident occurred in the natural environment of continuous forest complexes, recommends increasing caution when moving in unclear terrain and dense vegetation and alerting bears to the presence of humans in order to avoid unexpected collisions.
The attack took place in difficult-to-reach terrain in the Chočské vrchy. Firefighters and mountain rescuers helped transport the injured. Petra Klimešová, spokeswoman for the Emergency Medical Service Operations Center, told TASR that after initial treatment, paramedics transported the man to a hospital in Liptovský Mikuláš with a shoulder injury. The mountain rescue service said on the social network that the man’s injured shoulder, knee and hip were treated by an ambulance crew doctor.
