Alok says he gave up on being at the top: ‘It didn’t matter to be just a number in the world’

Alok is seen as the biggest Brazilian DJ in the world, but he doesn’t see himself that way. The DJ closed this Saturday night (20), at Rock in Rio Lisboa. He played the Music Valley Stage after headliner Katy Perry.

In a conversation with Estadão shortly before the show, the artist described having two aspects. “I’m more pop and broad in Brazil and electronic internationally,” he said. With success established in Europe, for him, the top is a consequence.

“I gave up on this crazy race of wanting to be at the top a long time ago,” he said. “It didn’t matter to be number one in the world and not be number one to my children.”

Alok said that his music is greatly influenced by what goes viral on the networks, but he doesn’t believe in superficiality of making art just for the internet. “The most important thing is not to do it with the exclusive bias of going viral. I criticize record companies that refuse to release music if it’s not ‘for TikTok’. I make the art I believe in,” he said.

O DJ performs in September in Brazil with two shows at Rock in Rio, Keep Art Humanin which he protests against artificial intelligence, and Wave The World, in which he is accompanied by his family. Alok’s parents have a great influence on the Brazilian electronic scene – they are the creators of Universo Paralello. For the artist, however, the genre is very niche in Brazil and his parents were unable to “pierce the bubble” like him.

“They remain very connected to the electronic niche as a matter of choice and because it is their truth,” he stated. “I followed a different path because I believed that my music could be a tool to confront more people.”
