At least 1,028 deaths were attributed to heat in Spain in Junemonth that was marked por a heat wave that hit according to data published this Wednesday (1) by the Carlos III Health Institute, based in Madrid.
The number represents more than double the number for the same month in 2025 (407 deaths attributed to heat), which had been the hottest June since the beginning of the statistical series, according to the Spanish meteorological agency Aemet. June also ended the “hottest” first half of the year on record in Spain, Aemet said.
Mortality estimates are based on a system called “MoMo” (Mortality Monitoring), which compiles the number of deaths in Spain daily. and calculates the difference between real mortality and that predicted based on historical series records.
Aemet reported that the first half of 2026 was “the hottest for Spain as a whole since records began“, with an average temperature 1.6 °C above normal. “The first seven hottest semesters in the series (starting in 1961) occurred in the last 10 years”, stated the agency.
The month of June this year was the second hottest in the historical series, withwith an average temperature 3.2 °C above normal and only surpassed by that of 2025, according to the meteorological agency.
