Born in Almere, Netherlands, Sergiño Dest could be on the other side of the World Cup knockout stage. Formed in Ajax’s youth teams and with spells at Barcelona, Milan and PSV, the right-back chose to play for the United States, a decision that made him one of the team’s main technical references in the competition.
At 25 years old, Dest has experience at major European clubs and has already played more than 40 games for the North American team. Now, he reaches the round of 32 as one of the team’s weapons, which faces Bosnia in search of a place in the round of 16.
From the Netherlands to the United States national team
Dest was born in the Dutch city of Almere, the son of a Dutch mother and an American father, a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. With dual citizenship, he played for the Dutch youth teams, but in October 2019, he decided to represent them at senior level.
According to the player himself, his father’s influence was decisive in his choice. So much so that the number 2 shirt is worn in honor of the number his father wore when he also played football.
Shortly after the decision, Dest debuted for the main team, aged 18, in a friendly against Mexico.
Career built among the European elite
The full-back was revealed by Ajax, where he made his professional debut in 2019 and received the club’s Talent of the Future award. The performance caught the attention of Barcelona, who signed him in 2020. With the transfer, Dest became the first North American to defend the Catalan club in LaLiga.
He then spent a season on loan at Milan, participating in the campaign that took the Italian team to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Since 2023, he has played for PSV Eindhoven. Initially loaned, he was signed permanently in 2024 and participated in winning three consecutive Dutch Championship titles, in addition to two Dutch Super Cups.
Featured in World Cups
Dest played in all four games at the 2022 World Cup, including the elimination to the Netherlands in the round of 16.
In the group stage of that World Cup, he assisted Christian Pulisic’s goal in the 1-0 victory over Iran, a result that guaranteed the North Americans’ qualification for the knockout stage.
After a period away due to injury, he was called up again in September 2025 and regained space in the team during the 2026 World Cup cycle.
A full-back with his own style
In addition to his defensive ability, Dest is known for his technical quality and attacking attacks. In an interview during the World Cup, he stated that he hopes to be remembered as “a unique full-back”, capable of combining skill, dribbling and efficiency.
Off the field, he leads a discreet routine. He says he prefers to rest on his days off by playing video games, watching movies or meeting friends. He also revealed that he likes to explore new cultures and has Japan as one of the destinations he dreams of visiting.
Important piece for the knockout stage
Classified at the top of Group D, they face Bosnia in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Due to his international experience, offensive capacity and versatility on both sides of the field, Sergiño Dest appears as one of the North American team’s main assets to stay alive in the competition.
The duel also reinforces the winger’s unique trajectory: born in the Netherlands, trained in one of the biggest centers of European football and consolidated as one of the United States’ main technical references on the biggest stage in world football.
