Carlos Bolsonaro resigns from his mandate as councilor for Rio – 12/11/2025 – Power

Son of the former president (), (PL) announced this Thursday (11) the resignation of his mandate as councilor for the . Carlos confirmed that he will run for the Senate for Santa Catarina.

Carlos announced his resignation from the Chamber’s rostrum, during the plenary session.

“I love Rio de Janeiro, I grew up here and built a story, here I leave an important part of who I am. I leave this city with a heart full of longing, but with the serenity of someone who knows they are serving a greater mission, of which I have always been part,” he stated.

“I’m going to Santa Catarina to fulfill a calling that I couldn’t fulfill here, because I made a choice always guided by my heart. It’s not an escape, it’s the continuation of a fight.”

With a choked voice, the councilor mentioned his father and praised the unsuccessful vote of minister Luiz Fux, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), in the trial of the coup plot.

“Today he faces an unfair life, the result of a process filled with contradictions, vices and political interpretations.”

During his speech, Carlos listed what he considered achievements of the mandate, such as the creation of a classic literature club, “to recover the imagination, culture and depth that modern education insists on abandoning”, according to him, the creation of the day of solidarity with the people of Israel, the day of freedom of expression and the choice of names for public schools.

Carlos, 43, was serving his seventh consecutive term in the City Council. His first election was in 2000, at the age of 17. He took over at 18.

In the last municipal election Carlos was the most voted councilor in the city, with 130,480 votes, more than double the second most voted, Márcio Ribeiro (PSD), with 56,770 votes.

With Carlos’ departure, the PL’s first substitute, Alana Passos, former state deputy, will assume the seat next year. Alana met this Thursday with the president of the party’s municipal directory, Bruno Bonetti. The legislative year in the Rio Chamber ends next Tuesday (16).

Carlos Bolsonaro’s departure to run for a seat in the Senate for Santa Catarina, Bolsonaro’s personal nomination, has generated one since June.

The fight involves state deputy Ana Campagnolo (PL), who is the most voted in the Santa Catarina Legislature, Carol de Toni (PL-SC), federal deputy with the most votes in the state, the governor (PL), senator Esperidão Amin (PP-SC) and Carlos.

The Santa Catarina right has been organizing for more than a year to launch two candidacies: that of deputy Carol de Toni and senator Amin.

The choice of Carlos Bolsonaro marked Carol de Toni’s chance of candidacy, in the opinion of the PL’s Santa Catarina wing.

Despite the two vacancies in dispute, the governor (PL) must support the re-election of senator Espiridião Amin (PP), which would make a pure ticket with two PL names for the Senate unfeasible. Given the adverse scenario, De Toni is considering migrating to Novo.
