Kvarg is a thick cottage cheese made from skimmed milk and lactic acid bacteria. We can find many different types, and the most popular ones include vanilla, strawberry and natural quark.
It has a simple composition, and its natural version does not contain a large dose of sugar. 200 g of cheese contains approximately 22.4 g of protein. An additional advantage is its low caloric value and low fat content. There are only about 65 kcal in 100 g. This makes it an excellent base for breakfast. Skyr is a yogurt that has been known to Icelanders for years. Only recently it has been available on the Polish market. It is very similar to the classic yogurts we know. What sets it apart, however, is this thick consistency, slightly sour taste, as well as the amount of valuable nutrients.
Like kvarg, it contains a large dose of protein, probiotic bacteria, and is low in calories. Skyr is also there source of B vitamins, which are crucial for the proper functioning of the circulatory system, nervous system and heart function. 100 g of yogurt contains 12 g of protein and approximately 65 kcal. Like kvarg, we will find many different variants of skyr that will be suitable for any occasion.
It cannot be denied that both products are extremely healthy. Thanks to a large dose of protein per serving they keep you full for a long time and can facilitate weight loss. Additionally, probiotic bacteria support the functioning of the digestive system and thus make the metabolism work well.
This means that when choosing kvarg or skyr on a store shelf, we don’t have to remember about their health properties, but rather about their taste and consistency. Kvarg is thicker, less sour and will be a suitable replacement for popular cream cheese. It works better as a spread for sandwiches or a stuffing for pancakes.
Skyr, on the other hand, is lighter and will be a better addition to seasonal fruit, oatmeal or cocktails. Both products will make the diet pleasant and we will not experience its negative effects. For this reason, the best choice is to diversify your menu and use these two yogurts interchangeably in the kitchen.
