End of communication silence: US and Russian generals resume high-level dialogue

After an almost five-year hiatus, there is a fundamental turn in military communication between Washington and Moscow. The US European Command confirmed that following negotiations in Abu Dhabi, the two sides agreed to resume direct dialogue at a high military level.

The United States and Russia have agreed to resume high-level dialogue between the military leaders of the two countries after a meeting of senior Russian and American military officials in Abu Dhabi, the United States European Command said in a statement on Thursday. Negotiations in Abu Dhabi

The agreement was reached after meetings in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) between General Alexus Grynkewich, the commander of the US European Command – also the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in Europe – and high-ranking Russian and Ukrainian military officials, according to the statement.

In Abu Dhabi, Grynkewich took part in negotiations between American, Russian and Ukrainian officials on ending the war in Ukraine. According to the statement, the channel will “ensure constant contact between the military sides as both sides continue to work towards a lasting peace.”

High-level communications between US and Russian military officials were cut off in 2021, just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, AFP recalled.
