First lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, a.k.a., will parade on a samba school float on Carnival Sunday, February 15th. Participation will be in the presentation of Academicos de Niterói, which will honor the president (). watch the parade.
Members of the opposition claim that this is a misuse of purpose to promote authorities. The complaint is based on the fact that the samba schools in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival special group receive federal sponsorship. There is also criticism about the supposed early election campaign.
The assessment of the government’s legal advisors is that there is no problem with the First Lady’s participation, as she is not formally an authority nor holds any public office.
The analysis comes both from government advisors who discussed the matter internally and from members of the Executive questioned by the Sheet. There would have been no formal consultation on the topic.
The exposure of political figures at events such as Carnival becomes a delicate issue in election years, such as 2026.
Acadêmicos de Niterói will present the plot “From the top of the mulungu comes hope: Lula, the worker in Brazil”.
The parade has excited the President of the Republic. He mentioned the event to deputies he had dinner with last week and said they could come with him to watch the presentation.
At that same appointment, a dinner at Granja do Torto, in Brasília, Lula showed guests the school’s samba, which talks about the president’s mother. Known as Dona Lindu, she is frequently mentioned by Lula in his speeches.
Some PT members view the parade with concern because they believe it is excessive exposure.
The parades last more than an hour. The audience is the same for all schools. In other words, it will not be like the audience at an event organized by the federal government or the PT, when the participants are Lula supporters.
These sectors of the party fear the possibility of a boo. Other PT members interviewed by the report, however, rule out this possibility. In this group, the assessment is that the public at Rio Carnival will be interested in the parades and not in political demonstrations.
A Sheet it also found that some ministers who were considering participating in the parade withdrew for fear of political repercussions. Unlike Janja, they hold public office and contest elections.
Lula will follow the parade from the box at Rio de Janeiro City Hall, commanded by his ally (PSD).
The president intends to make two other appearances in cities that are protagonists of Carnival. Both should be on the same day, but have not yet been officially confirmed.
Lula plans to attend Galo da Madrugada, the most famous Carnival group in Recife, on Saturday morning (14). He was invited by the mayor of the capital of Pernambuco, (PSB).
The president tries to keep two opposing forces in Pernambuco politics in his alliance. In addition to João Campos, who intends to run for government in October, Lula is also an ally of the governor, (PSD), who will seek re-election.
The PT member is also expected to fly to Salvador on Saturday. The plan is to watch the Os Mascarados group, which parades during the night. The main musical attraction will be the Minister of Culture, . The idea of watching Margareth’s show came from the first lady, Janja.
Voting intention surveys show that the current governor of Bahia, PT member Jerônimo Rodrigues, is threatened with re-election by the former mayor of Salvador (União). Lula is trying to transfer his popularity to the governor as a way to reduce the chances of defeat in the race for governor of Bahia.
