The vehicle transported workers from Maranhão to Santa Catarina to harvest apples
The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo reported this Tuesday (17) that the number of deaths rose to seven due to the bus accident that occurred at kilometer 270 of BR-153, near Marília, in the interior of the state. The vehicle was transporting workers from Maranhão to Santa Catarina to harvest apples. The driver reportedly lost control after one of the tires burst.
Also on Monday (16), the bus driver was indicted for the crimes of bodily harm and homicide with possible intent, by taking the risk of killing. He was admitted under escort, according to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP-SP). The Civil Police are investigating the causes of the tragedy.
According to the Fire Department, 46 people were rescued from the scene of the accident and taken to six different health units.
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) lamented the accident. “Together with the city of Marília, the state government will provide full support to the injured and their families in this moment of pain. We are in prayer in the hope that God, in his infinite mercy, will restore the injured, provide comfort and support to the families and will look kindly on the victims.”
