The star of the British competition The Voice Dean Franklin has died at the age of 36. writes . It happened just eight weeks after doctors diagnosed him with esophageal cancer. The singer from London, who was coached by Paloma Faith in 2016, started chemotherapy only last month. He left behind a 17-year-old daughter.

Oesophageal cancer is one of the less common types compared to breast or lung cancer, but the incidence in the UK is higher than in most of Europe. This disease originates in the esophagus, that is, in the tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Doctors often diagnose it late due to unclear initial symptoms, which leads to unfavorable treatment results.

The most common symptoms include: trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent heartburn, and pain in the throat or behind the breastbone. However, oncologist Jason Chow also warns against hidden symptoms: return of food back in the throat persistent cough, that doesn’t back down hoarse voice, coughing up blood, dark to black stools, or tiredness.

The risk of the disease is increased by smoking, drinking alcohol and obesity. People suffering from chronic heartburn are also at risk. In Britain, around 9,200 people are diagnosed with the disease each year, with up to 80% dying within five years. More than a third of patients learn about the disease only when it is too late to cure it. “If you experience any of these symptoms, we recommend seeing a general practitioner. With early detection, there is a high chance of a cure,” says Professor Sheraz Markar.

Dean Franklin documented his fight with the disease on Instagram, where he was also supported by coach Paloma Faith and presenter Emma Willis. Just a week ago, he described unbearable pain in the liver, which he felt especially at night. He set up a fundraiser to provide for his daughter, which has so far raised more than £31,000.
