Meteorological winter is ending! Slovakia was hit by a record heat wave: they measured up to 16.1 degrees Celsius here today

  • Afternoon temperatures reach 10 to 16 degrees Celsius on Saturday, well above normal.
  • In Bystričany, they measured 16.1 degrees Celsius, probably a record this winter.
  • Significant temperature records were set at Štrbský Pleso and Skalnat pleso.
  • The edge of the cold front will pass on Monday, warming will resume on Tuesday.

Meteorological winter ends on Saturday, but the weather has been distinctly spring for several days. The afternoon temperature in sunny weather usually reaches 10 to 16 degrees Celsius, which are values well above the long-term normal, daily temperature records are even occasionally broken. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) informs about this on the social network.

He explained that the weather in our area is affected by a large pressure area centered over Romania and Ukraine. On its backside, very warm air is flowing towards us from the southwest. The warmest is on the upper Nitra, in Bystričany, meteorologists measured 16.1 degrees Celsius, which will probably be the highest temperature this winter (so far the highest temperature was 15.3 degrees Celsius in Orechova on December 5).

According to SHMÚ, it is also very warm in the mountains, sometimes even record-breaking. At Štrbské Pleso, the temperature rose to 11.8 degrees Celsius, beating the 1959 record by a few tenths of a degree. It was even warmer at Skalnat pleso, 13.3 degrees Celsius, the 2017 record valid for Saturday was thus surpassed by more than four degrees Celsius.

According to meteorologists, the weather will not change significantly on Sunday (March 1st), after a cold morning, the afternoon will be similarly warm as on Saturday. In the course of the day, cloud cover will gradually increase in the western half.

“It will be related to an unremarkable cold front, which will advance through Poland and Ukraine to the southeast on the night of Monday (2/3) and on Monday. It will partially affect the weather in our area as well – cloud cover will temporarily increase, but precipitation will occur only exceptionally and it will cool down slightly in the north,” explained SHMÚ. He added that from Tuesday (March 3), sunny weather will prevail again with a temperature similar to Saturday.
