The construction of a new international bridge over the River Sever promises to bring Portugal and Spain closer together in one of the areas where the border still means long detours and high travel times. The project, long desired by local populations, could reduce distances and strengthen the connection between the two countries.

This future infrastructure will connect Montalvão, in the municipality of Nisa, to Cedillo, in the Spanish province of Extremadura, creating a direct crossing where there is currently no permanent road connection, according to the Spanish portal 20minutos.

Direct connection between two countries

The bridge will be built over the Sever River, a watercourse that marks part of the border between the two territories. By establishing this connection, the project aims to reduce the isolation of cross-border communities that currently rely on long routes to cross the border.

According to the same source, the new crossing will shorten the connection between Montalvão and Cedillo by around 85 kilometers, which represents significant savings in travel time and costs.

Impact on regional mobility

The new bridge between Portugal and Spain could also benefit those who travel between Lisbon and Madrid frequently. By optimizing the road connection in this interior area, the infrastructure will contribute to making the route between the two capitals more efficient.

Although it does not replace the existing main expressways, the new crossing reinforces the accessibility network on the Portuguese-Spanish border, creating alternatives if necessary and enhancing new circulation flows.

The global investment is estimated at more than 24 million euros. Around five million will be guaranteed by the government of Extremadura, while more than 19 million will be paid by the Nisa City Council, says the same source.

Expected long-term benefits

This is a project that local populations have been demanding for several years, who see the bridge as an opportunity to reinforce cooperation between neighboring territories. Among the main benefits highlighted is the improvement of connectivity between Montalvão and Cedillo, facilitating daily travel, services and family contacts on both sides of the border.

A positive impact on the local economy is also expected, through increased commercial exchange, tourism and new investment opportunities in low population density areas, according to the .
