The joint bombings by the United States and Israel on Iran reached the heart of the country’s capital on Saturday morning. One of the objectives has been the building of the residence of Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, visible in the satellite image taken by Airbus that accompanies this information. The building attacked is usually the main residence of Khamenei and senior officials of the regime.

The attacks of the operation, called Epic Fury, have reached at least twelve cities in the country in total, causing 200 deaths and more than 700 injuries, according to the first estimates of the Red Crescent.

Before confirming the death of its leader, Iran reacted less than three hours after the attack. It hit four US sites in the region: three air bases (in Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates) and a naval base (in Bahrain).

This Sunday morning, missile launches also continued towards Israel. In Tel Aviv, the country’s economic capital, anti-aircraft alarms were activated and the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed to have already shot down several projectiles launched from Iran. The Israeli anti-missile system is one of the most advanced in the world.

One of the unknowns is how far the Iranian response can go. Iran has the largest missile arsenal in the Middle East, with ballistic and cruise projectiles capable of reaching Israel and southeastern Europe, according to the Center for Strategic Studies (CSIS).

The United States has at least 40,000 troops deployed in the Middle East, who must protect themselves from another of Iran’s assets: the Shiite militias that the Islamic Republic can activate against its enemies. It is worth keeping in mind that the war that Israel has waged in the region after the Hamas attacks in October 2023 – with bombings in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Qatar and Yemen, in addition to Gaza – has reduced the response capacity of its allies, although it has not eliminated it completely.
