Price of free-range eggs ‘shoots’: but are they worth it?

European Union 'tightens' and supermarkets in Portugal will feel the impact. Find out how

Eggs from free-range chickens are more expensive in Portugal, with an increase of close to one euro per half dozen since 2022, but they maintain high quality levels. The conclusion is the result of an analysis by DECO PROteste, which evaluated nine brands available on the national market.

According to data from the consumer protection agency, the price of these eggs followed the increase in the basic food basket. In January 2022, half a dozen cost R$1.14. Currently, the average value is 2.12 euros.

The increase is significant and raises the question about the relationship between price and quality, especially in a context of greater pressure on family budgets.

DECO PROteste analyzed nine brands of eggs from pasture-raised chickens and concluded that freshness is guaranteed. According to the same source, no pathogenic bacteria were found inside or outside the eggs.

The evaluation, however, identified a less positive aspect. In five of the brands tested, some eggs had visible dirt on the shell. According to the organization, this situation, in addition to being unappealing, can increase the likelihood of contamination.

The publication explains that the shell is the main entry route for potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as salmonella. Therefore, it is recommended that eggs are not cracked directly into the bowl where non-cooked foods will be prepared.

Even so, according to DECO PROteste, the overall quality of the eggs analyzed is considered good, regardless of how the chickens are raised.

What does “outdoors” mean anyway?

For many consumers, the “free range” designation is associated with better animal welfare conditions. However, the legal framework allows exceptions.

According to the organization, legislation establishes that chickens must have continuous access to the outside during the day. However, it allows restrictions for limited periods in the morning hours, based on good agricultural practices.

According to the same source, this formulation does not define clear objective criteria, which may hinder rigorous inspection mechanisms. In practice, the actual time that chickens spend outside the houses may vary depending on the producer.

DECO PROteste warns that this flexibility could weaken the confidence of consumers who associate the designation “outdoors” with effective conditions of regular access to the outdoors.

The best mark in the test

Despite the price increase, the test results were overall positive. According to the website, the eggs analyzed reached a quality level considered high.

Among the nine brands evaluated, one stood out. According to the publication, the Aldi brand obtained the best classification in all the criteria analyzed.

The final decision rests with the consumer. The price has risen significantly, the quality remains consistent and the “free range” label continues to spark debate. Between perception, trust and budget, the choice may be less simple than it seems at first glance.
