For many people, surrogacy is a way to fulfill their dream of having their own child. For Olivia Maurel it is a system that turns women and children into objects in a market. The activist, who was herself born to a surrogate mother, is now campaigning internationally against this practice. She is a spokesperson for the Casablanca Declaration, an unusual alliance of feminists, lawyers, doctors, left-wing and conservative activists and religious groups. She describes herself as an atheist feminist. The alliance’s common goal: a global ban on surrogacy.
