Switzerland closes airspace to US flights linked to conflict with Iran

(Bloomberg) — Switzerland has closed its airspace to U.S. military flights directly linked to the war with Iran, citing its tradition of neutrality in armed conflicts.

Two requests for American reconnaissance planes to fly over Swiss territory this Sunday were rejected, the federal government in Bern said in a statement released this Saturday. Another three flights, including two transport aircraft, were authorized.

According to the government, new requests for US overflights that exceed normally recorded levels will be denied unless the purpose is clear and unrelated to the conflict.

“The neutrality law prohibits overflights by parties involved in the conflict that have military purposes,” the statement states.
