The phone call followed a tragic incident in Arbil, Iraq, where French soldier Arnaud Frion was killed and six others were injured in a drone attack. The attack raised tensions between France and Iran, with Macron calling Iran’s actions unacceptable and calling for an immediate halt to attacks carried out by Iran directly or through its allies, such as in Lebanon and Iraq.
Macron warns of chaos
In his statement, the French president emphasized that France is acting exclusively within the framework of defensive measures to protect its interests, regional partners and freedom of navigation. According to him, it is inadmissible for France to become the target of attacks, pointing out that the consequences of these actions are felt not only by Iranians, but also by the people of the entire region.
At the same time, Macron called for the creation of a new political and security framework that would ensure peace and stability. This framework should include guarantees that Iran will not acquire nuclear weapons, while addressing the threats associated with its ballistic missile program and destabilizing activities in the region and internationally.
Restoration of freedom of navigation
In his statement, the French president also called for the restoration of freedom through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which is a key point for international trade and energy security. The strait has become a site of heightened tension in recent weeks due to Iranian actions.
The situation in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel carried out attacks on February 28, which provoked Iranian retaliatory strikes. These actions affected not only Israel, but also countries in the Persian Gulf and the wider region. In this context, France is trying to promote diplomatic solutions that would prevent further escalation of the conflict.
