The minister, from the (Supreme Federal Court), stated that Brazil owes a debt to Alexandre de Moraes. Amid a crisis in the court’s image as a result of the investigation into the Banco Master fraud, the dean spoke in defense of his colleague’s actions.

The statements were made at the opening of the plenary session this Thursday (19). Next Sunday (22), Moraes completes nine years of his tenure at the STF.

“Brazil owes a debt to your excellence, Minister Alexandre. Future generations will know how to recognize you,” he said.

Currently, ministers are at the center of the damage, due to mentions located on the cell phone of the former banker, owner of Master. Both deny any wrongdoing.

The investigations found that Master hired the law firm of Viviane Barci de Moraes, the minister’s wife, for R$129 million over a three-year period.

“Your Excellency, who, with unbreakable spirit, has already endured so many tribulations in these nine years due to your impeccable, testing and sacrificial performance, will have the strength to endure as many others as may arise”, said Gilmar Mendes.

According to the dean, the STF is proud and the Brazilian people can be reassured by having the minister in the court. The minister became emotional at the end of his speech.

Gilmar cited the report on the 2022 coup plot, Moraes’ presidency at the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) that year, the fake news investigation, the suspensions of X (former Twitter) and the clashes with billionaire Elon Musk, the sanctions of the Magnitsky Law.

Before, the president of the court, Luiz Edson Fachin opened the session and the tributes, remembering that Moraes took office on March 22, 2017 and the magistrate’s previous career and relevant cases reported by him.

When citing the case that culminated in the conviction and imprisonment of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), military personnel and allies for an attempted coup, the president spoke of the courage to lead the process so that, in the end, the Constitution was reaffirmed.

“This is the mark of a magistrate who understands where the strength of a court lies: not in its individual members, but in the trust that society places in the method by which it decides. Nine years dedicated to this method, to this House and to this Republic that belongs to everyone”, said Fachin.
