Carolina Marín, one of the legends of Spanish sport, announces her retirement | Sports

the most influential figure in the history of Spanish badminton and one of the legends of world sport, has decided to end his sporting career and therefore, his absence on the court at the next European Championships in Huelva 2026.

After a process of reflection and prioritizing the well-being of her knee – as she already announced would be her absolute priority at this stage – the 32-year-old athlete has decided that it is time to listen to her body. Although the illusion of competing at home became a huge emotional driver, health and future quality of life have prevailed over high competition: “I don’t want to put my body at risk for it.”

In a very special message, the player wanted to remember the people she has been closest to in her career: “This journey would not have been possible without each of the people who have been part of my team and my family. Thank you for never letting me fall, for being by my side and for supporting me in the hardest moments. Thank you for your unconditional love, for never leaving me alone or letting go of my hand.”

Despite his absence on the track, during the week of the competition, where he will carry out different actions and events with the aim of giving back to his city for the support and affection received throughout his career: “I wanted the road to end in Huelva and that is how it will be.”

Carolina Marín’s track record is impressive. She achieved Olympic Gold in 2016. She has been a triple World Champion (2014, 2015 and 2018) and eight-time European Champion (with consecutive titles between 2014 and 2024). It has also been number 1 in the world ranking and among other high-ranking distinctions it is worth noting the Princess of Asturias Sports Award 2024; the Gold Medal and Bronze Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit (2014 and 2016); and the 2014 Reina Sofía National Sports Award.
