Traditional establishment in Lapa displayed a sign on the sidewalk stating that citizens of these nationalities are ‘not welcome’
The Partisan bar, located in Lapa and a traditional bohemian stronghold in the center of Rio de Janeiro, was fined R$9,520 for the Procon-RJ after prohibit entry of customers two United States e from Israel. The fine occurred after the establishment displayed a sign at the entrance with discriminatory messagesa measure that quickly had repercussions on the internet.
The controversy began when the bar placed a chalk sign on its sidewalk with a message in English: “US & Israel Citizens are NOT welcome.” The political positioning of the establishment would be linked to the conflict in the Middle Eastbetween Iran, USA e Israel.
Images of the sign quickly went viral on social media and reached Procon-RJ. The consumer protection agency carried out a blitz no local, found the irregularity e imposed the fine of just over R$9,500.
Procon-RJ reiterated that commercial establishments must welcome e welcome consumersand it is strictly prohibited to do any kind of distinction or discrimination by color, race, gender or nationality.
