Currently, the weather has calmed down a bit and the coming days will be warmer and sunnier. In many regions of Poland, temperatures will exceed 15 degrees Celsius. May Day in the Polish People’s Republic. How were May Day parades celebrated?
. It was one of the most important days in the calendar of the Polish People’s Republic, and at the same time the greatest display of the state’s organizational strength. In cities, huge processions were organized that passed through the main streets, often towards the honorary stands placed in the central squares. Party elites stood there, waved to the crowds and received “spontaneous” ovations. In reality, spontaneity was rather moderate, because participation in marches was formally obligatory – schools, workplaces and institutions had their own designated delegations. Banners, red flags, slogans about the unity of the working class and the success of the five-year plan created a background that was difficult to confuse with anything else. After the official part, however, came the moment that many had been waiting for more than the speeches – the “private May Day celebration”. People went home, to workers’ plots, to rivers and lakes. In the Polish People’s Republic, a plot of land was more than a garden – it was a small oasis of freedom. The first grilled sausages (or rather on a makeshift grill), bottled beer and a radio playing with crackling reception appeared there. In times when access to meat and alcohol was limited, May “supplies” were often the result of long preparations and contacts at a butcher’s shop.
May 2 was not formally a day off at that time, although in practice many people took leave on demand or “arranged” sick leave. Various events were organized in schools and workplaces, but the atmosphere was much more relaxed than the day before. It was a transitional moment – between a state ceremony and private relaxation. In many places, trips started on our own – by train, company buses or simply a Syrenka packed to the roof.
May 3, however, had a long and complicated history. In the Polish People’s Republic, for many years it was not officially celebrated as the anniversary of the Constitution of May 3, because the authorities were reluctant to respect pre-war and national traditions. It was only in 1981 that its state character was restored. Previously, this day was quiet, unofficial, sometimes used for family meetings, walks or the continuation of the May weekend rest – without red flags and speeches.
