Friedrich Merz criticized the conduct of peace negotiations and questioned Trump’s strategy for negotiating an end to the war
The Chancellor of Germany, (CDU, center-right), said this Monday (April 27, 2026) that Iran humiliates the United States by conducting fruitless negotiations for a ceasefire. During a meeting with students from the city of Marsberg, the German recalled that North American authorities travel to Islamabad, Pakistan, without making any progress in negotiations with Iranian representatives.
“The Iranians are clearly stronger than expected and the Americans clearly don’t have a truly convincing negotiating strategy either.”he declared. “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, particularly the so-called Revolutionary Guards.”
The German Chancellor questioned what exit strategy the president’s government (Republican Party) seeks in the war against Iran. Merz acknowledged that Tehran has been “skillful” when negotiating the terms of a ceasefire in the war between the countries.
The Republican has frequently criticized governments linked to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) – a Western military alliance led by the USA. Germany, like most of the group’s countries, distanced itself from the conflict and did not provide military support to the United States.
On April 9, Trump said the organization “wasn’t there” when the country needed it. The statement came after a meeting with the secretary general of the military alliance, in Washington, at the White House.
Furthermore, conflicts intensified due to disagreements over support for Ukraine in the conflict against Russia. Since the start of the war with Iran, the American president has repeatedly said that the United States “shouldn’t”but which helped Kiev militarily.
