A lawyer from the English city of Bristol started experiencing pain in her right heel in 2021. Despite regularly going to physical therapy and exercising, the unpleasant pain persisted. She therefore underwent magnetic resonance imaging, which revealed an unusual formation in the ankle.
Thinking it was a tumor, doctors sent her to a specialist hospital in Oxford, where she received the devastating diagnosis a few months later. It turned out that he was suffering from a condition called chondrosarcoma, which is a rare form of bone cancer. “When we found out, we were shocked. I was worried that it would have a negative effect on my pregnancy,” said Christine.
In early 2022, Christine underwent surgery to remove the tumor because her type of cancer does not respond to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. At first she was able to return to work and lead a normal life, but when she was expecting her second daughter, Chloe, she noticed swelling in her heel and ankle area. Doctors advised the English woman not to undergo any invasive examinations during pregnancy.
But after the birth of Chloe in February 2023, they discovered that the cancer had returned. This time, Christine’s only option was to amputate her leg below the knee. “I knew that if this was the price of seeing my children grow up and getting rid of cancer, I had no choice,” she noted. For several months, Christine seemed to be free of the disease, but in April 2024, she received the news she feared the most. The cancer has spread to the lungs, is stage four and is incurable. “I was very surprised because I didn’t have difficulty breathing or coughing“, she admitted.
She was given a sad prognosis that she would live five years at most. She immediately started thinking about her two daughters, who she probably won’t see grow up. “It destroyed me because I’m in danger of not being remembered in a few years,” explained a devastated Christine.
Since her diagnosis, the lawyer has undergone several procedures, including a lobectomy and two ablations. Further treatment includes examinations every three months and, if necessary, further operations. Her time is running out because doctors are limited by how much of her lung they can remove. The last examinations of the patient were fine, so her condition is stable for now.
Currently, Christine wants to enjoy the time she has left with her family. “I care a lot about making memories. Every month I write my kids a letter with a little summary of what we’ve been doing so they have an idea of what I’ve been like when I’m gone. I’m trying not to let cancer control me in my daily life and destroy everything we do“, she stated.
In addition, she trains with a prosthesis to participate in a 10-kilometer race with the name Race For Life.
