Erika and Sâmia sue agencies against Tarcísio after PM’s action at USP

Psol deputies call for investigation into the actions of police officers in vacating the university rectory

Federal deputy Erika Hilton (Psol-SP) stated this Sunday (May 10, 2026) that she will sue the São Paulo Attorney General’s Office against the government of Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), the PM (Military Police) and the rectory of USP (University of São Paulo). The motivation is that of the university during the early hours of the morning.

Federal deputy Sâmia Bomfim (Psol-SP) also announced measures against the PM’s actions. He said he will contact the Military Police Internal Affairs and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the “illegal and brutal conduct” of the operation.

In the early hours of this Sunday, the Military Police evacuated the USP rectory, occupied since Thursday (May 7) by students demanding improvements in student retention policies, such as housing and food. According to the PM, around 50 police officers participated in the action and 4 people were taken to the 7th Police District, where they gave a statement and were later released.

USP’s DCE (Central Student Directory) stated that the operation began at around 4:15 am and involved stun bombs, tear gas and batons. The entity also declared that students were injured and accused the PM of acting without a court decision to reinstate possession.

Erika Hilton rated it as “legitimate” the students’ protest and stated that the public authorities “refused to negotiate” before turning to the police force.

“It is absurd that public authorities refuse to negotiate, resort to violence and that four students were detained for exercising their constitutional right to protest”, he wrote.

The deputy also questioned the version presented by the USP rectory that she had not been warned in advance about the police operation. According to Erika, there is “evidences” of coordination between the university and the PM since Friday (May 9), including the cutting of water and energy services used by students.

“If the Military Police decided to act on their own within USP to silence, with violence, a protest by students who asked for negotiations with the rectory, this fact and the people behind this operation need to be urgently investigated”he declared.

Sâmia Bomfim supported police action and expressed support for the student movement.

I am contacting the Military Police Internal Affairs and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the illegal and brutal conduct last morning, when the riot police acted violently when entering USP and attacking students”, he stated.

USP stated in a statement that it informed the Public Security Secretariat of the occupation on May 7, but stated that it was not previously communicated by the PM about the eviction carried out this Sunday.

The rectory said it maintained dialogue with students over the last few days, but stated that negotiations had reached “to a limit” in the face of demands that he classified as outside the university’s administrative reach.

The Public Security Secretariat stated that “any allegations of excess will be rigorously investigated”.
