The president of China, Xi Jinping, classified the state visit of US President Donald Trump to Beijing as “historic” and stated that the two main powers in the world can help each other to prosper, in a speech before the banquet in the Great Hall of the People, this Thursday, 14.
“The American and Chinese people are great people. Achieving ‘China’s Rejuvenation’ and ‘Make America Great Again (MAGA)’ can go hand in hand. Let us help each other and promote the well-being of the entire world,” said the Chinese leader.
Xi said he had “in-depth exchanges” with Trump on China-US relations and international and regional dynamics. He also argued that the relationship between the two nations is the most important bilateral bond in the world and, therefore, needs to be preserved, with respect as the key to stability. On the occasion, he toasted the development and prosperity of both countries, the “bright future” of the relationship between Beijing and Washington and the well-being of the people.
“We need to make the US-China relationship work and never mess it up. Both countries can benefit from cooperation and lose from confrontation. We need to be partners, not rivals,” he said. “Trump and I agree to build a constructive relationship, with strategic stability, to promote stable, solid and sustainable development of the US-China relationship and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world,” he added.
In his speech, Trump highlighted the bilateral meeting with Xi, saying it was “fantastic”, and reinforced that, together, the US and China can create a “future of greater prosperity and cooperation”. The American president celebrated the “rich and lasting ties with the Chinese people” and invited Xi to visit the White House on September 24.
