Presidents held a meeting in the Great Hall of the People and visited the Temple of Heaven together

The President of China, Xi Jinping (CCP), received the North American President (Republican Party) in Beijing this Thursday (May 14, 2026). The leaders held a bilateral meeting at the Great Hall of the People and then , one of the main historical monuments in the Chinese capital.

Trump is the first US president to visit China in 9 years. The last time a head of the White House was on Chinese soil was Trump himself, in 2017. Before him, the last visit was by Barack Obama (Democratic Party), in 2016. On that occasion, Obama was not in Beijing, but in Hangzhou, for a G20 meeting.

During the meeting, the relationship between China and the United States in the coming years will determine the future of humanity. The Chinese leader highlighted that the two countries have more interests in common than differences.

Xi said China and the United States have a responsibility to ensure global stability. “We must be partners and not rivals,” said the Chinese president at the opening of the meeting.
