On Thursday, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, called for an end to the “control and isolation” of Cuba. She made her comments at a time when the Caribbean island is facing a major crisis due to an oil embargo by the United States. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
“After decades of mismanagement and political repression … Cuba’s economic crisis is truly reaching a tipping point,” she told reporters in Mexico. “The Cuban people deserve opportunity and freedom, not further control and isolation,” added.
Cuba is in the grip of a deep economic crisis that worsened earlier this year after the US ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and imposed an oil embargo on the island. Venezuela supplied Cuba with roughly half of the necessary supplies, and since then only one Russian tanker, Anatoly Kolodkin, has arrived in Cuba. Another Russian tanker has been stuck in the Atlantic Ocean for several weeks.
US President Donald Trump is demanding extensive reforms in Cuba and in the past has hinted at the possibility of a “friendly takeover”. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday that Cuba had accepted Washington’s offer of $100 million in humanitarian aid.
