Carmen Garcia’s statements, known on social media through the project “A Mãe Imperfeita”, are generating strong controversy on social media after an interview with the podcast “What to do when everything burns”, from Público.
During the conversation, which focused on the living conditions of the elderly and the lack of support from the State, Carmen Garcia stated that she believes that today’s society prefers to save animals instead of elderly people.
The nurse, with experience in the field of geriatrics, argued that there is a growing “dehumanization” towards older people and admitted that she did not understand who would choose to save an animal before a person in an extreme scenario.
The words quickly provoked thousands of reactions and divided opinions on social media, especially after Carmen shared comments from users who admitted choosing to save their pets before strangers.
The topic was also commented on by writer Pedro Chagas Freitas, who criticized the creation of “wars” between different human and social causes. “There are people who seem to need to turn empathy into a miserable competition,” the author wrote on social media.
Pedro Chagas Freitas also defended that compassion should not function as a choice between causes: “A minimally functional person can care about a sick child, an abandoned elderly person, an abused animal.”
Meanwhile, Carmen Garcia once again defended her position, insisting that the country shows more outrage at the mistreatment of animals than at situations of abandonment of the elderly.
