The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) confirmed this Friday (29) that the tariff flag in the month of June will remain yellow. As a result, electricity consumers will have additional cost of R$1,885 for every 100 kWh consumed. The announcement is due to the dry period in Brazilwhich leads to lower hydroelectric generation and the activation of thermal power plantswith higher cost.

Of January to April this year, the tariff flag remained greenreflecting the favorable generation conditions. In May, the yellow flag was raised, and this situation remains for the month of June. With the activation of the yellow flag, ANEEL reinforces that consumers must cultivate good consumption habits to avoid waste and contribute to the sustainability of the electricity sector.

Tariff flags

Tariff flags are the system that signals to consumers the real costs of generating electricity. To this end, the colors of the flags (green, yellow or red), defined monthly, indicate whether the energy will cost more or less depending on the electricity generation conditions.

The system, implemented in 2015is a different way of presenting a cost that was already on the energy bill, but that generally went unnoticed. There is, therefore, no new cost, but a price signal that tells the consumer the real cost of generation at the time he is consuming the energy, giving you the opportunity to adapt your consumption.

Before the flags, variations that occurred in energy generation costs, up or down, were passed on up to a year later, in the next tariff adjustment.

As cores

Flag verde: favorable conditions for energy generation. The fare is not subject to any increase;
Flag yellow: less favorable generation conditions. The tariff increases by R$0.01885 for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumed;
Flag red – Level 1: more costly generation conditions. The tariff increases by R$0.04463 for each kilowatt-hour kWh consumed.
Flag red – Level 2: even more costly generation conditions. The tariff increases by R$0.07877 for each kilowatt-hour kWh consumed.
